Recognizing National Speech-Language-Hearing Month

Our ability to communicate with the world around us is a sacred sense that often goes unnoticed until it’s too late. That is why every May, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) celebrates National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, a time to raise awareness about communication disorders. As hearing specialists, we want to highlight the importance of ASHA members and their role in providing life-changing treatment.

Strengthening Communication

Speech and hearing are an integral part of everyday communication. How we connect with others, build relationships, express thoughts and ideas, are all reliant on our ability to effectively communicate. During National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (NSLHM), our goal is to educate the people of Schenectady, Guilderland, and the surrounding communities about the importance of good hearing health and its role in communication and well-being.

Better Hearing Means Better Health

Supporting hearing health supports overall health and well-being. Research has shown that hearing loss can be associated with a host of comorbidities, including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. To maintain good health overall, it’s important to take care of your hearing.

Did You Know?

According to the World Health Organization, hearing loss is expected to affect 2.5 billion people worldwide by 2050. Already more than 50 million people in the U.S. alone have some degree of hearing loss, yet nearly 80% of people don’t treat it. This comes down to an inaccessibility of care and lack of awareness of the condition.

How You Can Help

Spreading awareness about hearing loss is a communal effort. Here’s how you can help:

  • Encourage loved ones to have their hearing checked
  • Wear hearing protection
  • Spread awareness about hearing loss
  • Have your hearing tested

Everyone deserves access to hearing healthcare. Sunnyview Hearing Center is dedicated to helping our community improve communication and quality of life. Help us spread awareness during NSLHM.
